EdTech – Where should we start?
When we investigate technology in the school environment, I firmly believe in the above statement with regards the integration strategies to be used. All technology developments need an understanding of pedagogy and learning theory in addition to how each school works and implements teaching and learning programmes.
The vision of rigorous learning experiences for every student is in many ways predicated on the potential of technology to help teachers to personalise learning.
Success Factors
A combination of factors contributes to the successful EdTech programs. The final aim for EdTech should be to transform teaching and learning in the classroom environment. The following factors contribute to the move from supplementing teaching to remodelling teaching.
- Visionary leadership that drives real change in the classroom, causing shifts in the education programme not merely for technology’s sake. The creation of teaching and learning strategies that are only possible with the use of technology. EdTech change is supported by a clear vision of what the school is attempting to accomplish.
- Professional development in the school environment is the second key contributing factor to success. The first role of the professional development plan should be clarifying the “why” instead of the “how.” The teachers need to understand how digital tools connect with the broader vision of classroom instruction and how these tools can help the teachers make significant shifts in what they are doing.
- Professional development of teachers is an on-going programme, with appropriate support for different levels of expertise. The provision of real-time support is of critical importance in any EdTech initiative.
The goal of any EdTech initiative is to help teachers to identify the ways that technology can better serve all of our learners and education in the broader community.
